Francisco de Goya is often considered the last of the Old Masters in terms of painting. He was born in 1746 in Aragon of Spain. After attending Escuelas Pias for schooling, he was apprenticed to José Luján, and later Anton Raphael Mengs and Francisco Bayeu y Subías. Through these apprenticeships the paintings of Francisco de Goya began to develop into the characteristic styles that he would later become renowned for painting. Goya would also study at the San Louis Academy in Saragossa, Spain. Goya achieved a start to his professional career as an artist when he obtained a position at the Royal Tapestry Factory of Santa Barbara in Madrid where he designed the images for tapestry-production. He excelled greatly in this position. In 1792, due to a fever illness, Francisco de Goya lost his hearing and would remain deaf for the rest of his life. Though a major life change, the effect of this unfortunate happening had little effect on the oil paintings of Francisco de Goya other than as some critics have stated, make the paintings more introspective and reflective. Variety is one of the key elements to the paintings of Francisco de Goya and even his career as a whole. His works included paintings, etchings, cartoon designs for tapestries, and lithography. In addition to variation of mediums and styles of work, the entire body of Francisco de Goya artwork is also often characterized by the variety of emotions and subjects presented within the works. Many of Goya’s most recognizable darker works are characterized by the use of thick dark brush strokes and his use of highlights in bright primary tones to reflect the emotion within. As Goya was appointed the Court Painter, his work obviously includes a large amount of court portraiture for the Royals and nobility, but it is interesting to note that these portraits were not always completed in the most flattering light. As many who study Goya’s work believe, his paintings were known as being unflattering to the portrait’s subject in most instances because he was not inclined to hide imperfections as he saw them. In the other Francisco de Goya paintings, Goya felt it was necessary in some cases to paint images which contained harsh criticisms of his own society. These Francisco de Goya oil paintings were a stark contrast to the quiet scenes of every day life that he painted in addition to the court portraiture of which he excelled in all areas. Francisco de Goya is known as one of the most significant artists in recorded history due to the lasting influence that his works have had on such highly varied movements in art such as Modernism, Expressionism, Surrealism, and Romanticism among others. Some of the paintings of Francisco de Goya which have retained the most fame through out time are: The Madhouse at Saragossa, Los Desastres de Guerra, Dos de Mayo, Tres de Mayo, Los Caprichos, The Naked Maja, Portrait of Ferdinand Guillemardet, The Family of Charles IV, and The Bordeaux Milkmaid.
