Frans Hals was a Dutch painter who was born in 1581 in Antwerp to Protestant parents. His first artistic training came when he was about nineteen years old and studied the art of mannerist painting with Karel van Mander and Hals was able to become a member of the Haarlem Painters’ Guild about ten years later. Also, when he was twenty-seven, he joined the Guild of St. Luke. Despite enjoying a fairly steady success through out his artistic career, Hals never became wealthy and continued working in other occupations such as an art dealer and art restorer. He was married twice and had ten children between the two marriages. The paintings of Frans Hals are significant in the history of Western art because as an artist he was able to revolutionize the idea of group portraiture in the baroque style. The success in the compositions of these paintings allows for the emphasis of all included figures, which had been a complaint of many patrons of group portraiture in the past; some members would be in a deemphasized portion of the painting or hidden in shadow. In the early group portraits, Hals strikes a balance between the colors used in the paintings and the energy he conveys from the group setting. In this way, the oil paintings of Frans Hals were great accomplishments in the field of group portraiture. Over time, Frans Hals artwork grew more restrained and he attempted to use more solemn shades and tones of colors to convey a deep psychological presence in the paintings. It is due to this ability, that Franz Hal paintings and portraits gained reputation as a valuable asset to Dutch mannerist portraiture as a whole. To the trained eye, it becomes evident that Frans Hals had an unrestrained yet keenly observational style of brush stroke. It was this accuracy in translating his vision to a free brush stroke that allowed for the highly advanced portrayal of textures and subtleties of lighting that escaped many of his contemporary portrait artists in the seventeenth century as well as portrait artists today. Hals was often noted for painting very quickly which is a fact that just further serves to make up the assertion that his skill between attaching the vision of the subject in front of him to the image on the canvas remained nearly unsurpassed. Of the surviving paintings by Frans Hal, the vast majority are portraits; many genre paintings without recorded names attached to their subjects. Some of the most famous Frans Hal oil paintings are: Portrait of a Jester with a Lute, Bohemian, Portrait of Rene Descartes, A Banquet of the Officers of the St. George Militia Company, Portrait of Stephanus Geeraerdts Alderman of Haarlem, The Laughing Child, and Portrait of Willem Van Heythuysen. All of these paintings display the strength of vision that Frans Hal possessed as he was able to quickly and accurately capture the images of a great variety of individuals during his time.
